Is Mahasweta Devi the Bahadur Shah Zafar of Bengali literature? Given the larger than life image of her and the way she has carried forward the torch of Bhadralok, it gives me immense doubt whether there is any worthy successor who can fill her shoes.
Not many people in the country could match the prowess of this writer par excellence. One more writer who proves beyond doubt that Indian English writing is centuries behind the regional satraps of literture.
Seldom has modern India seen the likes of M.T. Vasudevan Nair or U.R. Ananthamurthy to name a few who could match shoulders with yester year masters. Mahasweta Devi for sure slips into the darkness of horizon leaving us a lot of heritage to be proud of.
